Warren heavy timber truss construction was a predominant building method in the World War II era.  Wartime hangars and factories were assembled across North America using Warren trusses to create long clear span spaces.  80 years later, many buildings are still in use, however, truss members can be in need of repair.  In 2016, Beam Craft was hired by Edmonton contractor, Black and MacDonald, to complete the specified repairs on heavy timber trusses at the HMCS Nonsuch Naval Reserve building in Edmonton and the Cormack Armoury in Red Deer. 

This was a very challenging scope of work for our team.  We were responsible for supplying and installing all timber and glulam members, coatings, nuts and bolts, split rings, as well as, ensuring proper disposal of the old lead painted truss components noted for replacement. This was technical work which required substantial dismantling of trusses to remove and replace the broken members. To do this work, our carpenters worked at heights, managed hazardous materials, while navigating a maze of conduit, tension rods, and fire suppression lines. Engineered shoring and scaffold systems were a necessity in order to complete the work safely while maintaining the integrity of existing structures.
